Trump declares ‘energy ceasefire’ between Russia and Ukraine; Zelenskyy is waiting for details

President Donald Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire” as the countries trade blows on energy infrastructure, but it’s unclear whether either side has agreed to a truce.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump said in a social media statement, without providing details about the alleged pact.

The White House referred CNBC to the social media post when asked for more information on the ceasefire.

Trump’s statement on Truth Social comes as energy costs soar globally during the U.S. war with Iran. An energy truce between Ukraine and Russia could help to alleviate the oil and gas crunch ahead of winter.

In a social media post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: “Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well.”

“We are awaiting details from the American side,” Zelenskyy said. “For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace.”

Earlier in the week, Trump lashed out at Zelenskyy, suggesting he should be replaced and blaming him for high diesel costs that threaten to complicate the Republican Party’s chances ahead of November’s midterm election. Trump also said he had cut a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring Russian diesel to the market.

Zelenskyy said in response that Ukraine would only stop attacking oil refineries if Russia halted its attacks on Kyiv’s electric grid.

Ceasefires between Russia and Ukraine have been consistently difficult to hold since Russia invaded its neighbor in 2022. Trump has repeatedly sought to end the conflict, but so far has been unsuccessful.

Zelenskyy on ABC’s “This Week” earlier Sunday asked Trump to “give them [a] signal, not [to] attack energy infrastructure of Ukraine.”

“If they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this. Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attack[ing] your diesel,” he said, according to a show transcript.
